ADVANCES IN THE RESEARCH OF SERVICE INTELLIGENTIZATION OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

  • To achieve intelligentization for concrete structures during their service time, they must own the abilities of self-sensing of environments, self-monitoring of structural health, and self-adapting to damage. This goal can not be achieved within the conventional civil engineering discipline, and vast knowledge related to mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, material engineering and science, computer science, information, and sensor is required. Based on the research conducted by our group in recent years, this paper introduces and discusses two special topics of the concrete structures intelligentization, i.e. the electromechanical impedance method, which has been developed and used in structural health monitoring in the last two decades; and the sensor technology, for which emphasis is placed on the most recent advances. The study of these two special topics also requires knowledge from different disciplines, different methods, and different physical scales. Thus, the actualization of intelligent concrete structures depends largely on the intersection of disciplines and their integration, especially on the global developing level of the world science and technology. Prospects on the research of intelligent concrete structures are finally presented from a personal point of view.
